I'M NOT CERTAIN WE'RE AT THE THRESHOLD YET, BUT EVEN EVANGELICALS THEMSELVES SEE THE HANDWRITING ON THE WALL. CERTAINLY MICHAEL SPENCER, WRITING HIS OPINION FOR THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR DOES. WHAT SURPRISES ME IS THAT THE EVANGELICALS ARE SURPRISED!
MR. SPENCER SAYS, BECAUSE OF EVANGELICALS LINKING THEMSELVES SO CLOSELY WITH THE CULTURE WAR AND POLITICAL CONSERVATISM, MODERN SOCIETY IS BECOMING MORE HOSTILE TO THEIR ATTEMPTS AT BLOCKING CULTURAL PROGRESS AND INSTEAD VIEWS THEM AS AN ENEMY OF THE COMMON GOOD.
I THINK POLLS HAVE INDICATED THAT IT'S EVANGELICALS WHO HAVE BEEN BEHIND A KIND OF 'CLOSETED' SUPPORT FOR GEORGE BUSH'S POLICY OF TORTURING POW'S. I KNOW - THEY SAY IT'S OK AS LONG AS WE DON'T CALL POW'S - POW'S. IT'S EVANGELICALS WHO HAVE DEMONIZED LARGE SEGMENTS OF SOCIETY, PREACHING THAT SOME OF US ARE SOMEHOW LESS THAN HUMAN, AND QUITE BRAZENLY CALLING ON THE GOVERNMENT AND LEGISLATORS TO EXECUTE THOSE, WHO FOR A VARIETY OF REASONS, DO NOT SUBSCRIBE TO THEIR SUPERNATURAL AND MYSTICAL BELIEFS - AND YOU'RE SURPRISED AT THE RAPIDLY GROWING HOSTILITY TO RELIGION? DON'T BE!
INDIVIDUALS IN SOCIETY HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO BE HOSTILE TO EVANGELICALS. IT'S A COMPLETELY JUSTIFIABLE AND HUMAN RESPONSE. RELIGION SHOULD BE CRIMINALIZED IN MY OPINION. WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ME THREATENING TO KILL MY NEIGHBOR AND A SPOKESMAN FOR THE MORAL MAJORITY CALLING ON THE GOVERNMENT TO PUT TO DEATH HOMOSEXUALS, OR ANYBODY ELSE THEY DISAPPROVE OF FOR THAT MATTER? RELIGION, AND IT'S PRESENT DAY OFFSPRING LIKE THE MORAL MAJORITY AND REVEREND JAMES DOBSON'S HATE GROUPS, SHOULD BE OUTLAWED AND PARTICIPATION IN THEM PUNISHABLE, AT LEAST, BY INCARCERATION. ON THE OTHER HAND I THINK THAT IN A FREE SOCIETY PEOPLE SHOULD BE ABLE TO WORSHIP A ROCK IF THEY WANT TO - BUT PRIVATELY - AND ONLY WITH A RENEWED EFFORT BY POLICY MAKERS TO GUARANTEE WE HAVE WHAT OUR FOREFATHERS INTENDED - A CLEAR AND CERTAIN SEPARATION BETWEEN CHURCH AND STATE.
